Final Project

I would like to use non verbal communication as a focus for my presentation which would relate essay 3 and 4 and then use essay 5 to show the connection between 3 and 4. I think that a video clip that demonstrates the power of NVC would be interesting and demonstrate why NVC is so important in communication. I think these 3 essays (345) would be most interesting to revise and relate the most to one another.

Brainstorm

For the portfolio, I plan on using project #1 because I really enjoyed writing the narrative and it really made me think about how language is important and the role that it plays for others who struggle with it. I am also planning on using project #3 because it made me realize a lot of different things about how my career speaks and writes. This project was a big eye opener because I never really thought about how it has it's own language until that project. The final project that I plan on using for the portfolio would be my last project #5. I want to use this project because it is basically what this class was about to me, learning how to write as a part of your future career's discourse community which is an important thing to know.

Portfolio

I have 3 papers that look specifically at my career field, and those are gonna be the ones that I choose for my portfolio. I believe that they have been the most consistent in terms of information and they all relate in a way to each other. Also I found them to be the most enjoyable to do, due to the fact that it was on an interest of mine.

For the Portfolio I would like to include:

(1) Essay # 3 because I feel like i really enjoyed my discourse community
(2) Essay # 4 because my wikipedia entry was a build of essay #3, of which I put a great deal of thought into
(3) Essay # 5 because it is the final project and I am enjoying it and the progress i've made so far

Ideas for Final

I am thinking that I want to revise my wiki entry, my paper on my discourse community, and I cant really at this point decide the last one that I want to revise. My first essay was thinking about just becasue I enjoyed that one the most but I'm not sure if it need to be revised. It something that I am going to have to think about.

course portifolo brainstorm

For the three projects that we have to put on a CD as of now i am thinking i will use project #2 the powerpoint with the group, our group worked well together and our powerpoint was well put together. I am also going to use the wikipedia entry, that was one of my best projects. and possibly the last project#5. I might revise project #3 and use that but i am not sure yet, if my #5 goes well i will use that insdead and since i will be going in a different direction that first planned with #5 I think this project will go well.

Portfolio overview

My three best essays were the Expliotory Research Essay & Annotated Bibliography, Wikipedia Contribution, and the Personal Discourse Analysis. These three essays were chosen because they have helped me understand how to write efficiently and effectively based upon there high grades. By receiving these grades I felt that I have mastered on developing a techinique on how to write about the situation, rather than how I felt about the situation. I feel that this technique is very helpful because in any business you need to write about the business with full resources with evidence to support your case. If you master this technique can be considered a major asset to the business world.

portfolio brainstorming

1. Essay2: Personal Discourse Analysis
2. Essay3: Expository Research Essay + Annotated Bibliography
3. Essay4: Wikipedia Contribution

These are what will be included in my portfolio. I chose essay2 because I enjoyed the project and recieved a good grade. I felt that I understood this project well. I chose essay3 because it contains two things; research essay and annotated bib. This project kills two birds with one stone. It shows more of my work in one project. Having a wide variety of material included on the CD is better than few writings. Finally, I chose essay4 because it was a challenge at first, but in the end came out better than expected. I recieved a good grade on it and understood it completely, towards the end. I've never created an entry and want it to be a part of my portfolio.

Portfolio Ideas

I think for certain I want to add my final project into my portfolio because it shows most what I think I tried to explain in my past 2 essays which is PR being a form of promoting a product. I've created original digital images in Photoshop and also plan to have a PowerPoint for my final presentation so I actually get to show what I plan to do in my career field instead of simply saying. I always think a visual is better than having someone tell you or just by reading about it anyway which is why I wanted to create an image for this final project.

I'll probably put the first essay in my portfolio since it was a bit more personal for me. As for the last essay that I will include...I'm not sure just yet.

Portfolio Project

In preparation for the final portfolio project I have decided that I will most likely be burning projects #3-#5 onto a CD to turn in at the end of the semester. I have decided to use these three because they are very similiar in content and relativity and I feel they will make the final portfolio appropriate and sensible to the purpose and content of the assignment. I feel that these three would be my strongest and most significant assignments and will be useful to the purpose of the assignment.
For the final portfolio I am planning to include project #1, project #2, and project #3. I chose these projects because I think they best reflect my different writing abilities. Project #1 provides an example of my ability to write creatively. Project #2 shows how I am able to put together a power point and a presentation to communicate my ideas. Project #3 is an example of how I can write professionally. I think the previously listed projects are the best combination to show the different skills that I have learned in English 207.

As of now,
I have a powerpoint and part of a video completed to explain choreography and what makes up good choreography. Also, I have examples of underdeveloped choreography where the story does not make sense and the non-verbal communication messages are mixed.

final project progress

well actually i am still on the brainstorming phase of my work. after consulting with you yesterday i finally have an idea as to what i can do my project on. tonight and tomorrow i should have a rough draft ready.

Final Project

I am just getting started on my final project. I was set back a little by the game in Buffalo this week. I have a good idea of what I want to do it on. I am currently going thru all of my sources that I have found.
I will definitely need to meet with you next week, because I feel like I am behind the rest of the class. I am not exactly sure how to go about this final project. A little extra guidance would help me greatly.

self evaluation

As of now, I have my pamphlet completed. I am sure that it will need to be brushed up once you get done looking over it. I also still need to write a 3 page paper on what I did and why. I am not exactly sure what I need to include in it. I also need to put a power point together about my pamphlet.

Mall Evaluation

I feel that I am half way through my final project. I feel that I just need to add a couple material from my sources and I am done. I feel that the one thing that won't be done until the last minute is the hands-on approach teaching method for the class because I have to do it rather than study for it for the most part. The only question that I have is when are your office hours for next week?

Project #5 Self-Evaluation

My progress at this point in working with project #5 is going well but, I still have yet to improve my rhetoric and choice of language to use for my presentation which is in about two weeks. I finished the rough draft and I am pretty confident and decided on the sources that I am using for my presentation. I am planning to use a speech format for the presentation which will be presented as though it is a public address or speech which I am planning to shape into a persuasive address that concerns the importance and relevance of public address and speech as it relates and applies to different career fields. I will probably have some questions and more ideas to bring up as the final project comes closer.

Self Evaluation

My project currently, like most of my projects is different from what i had originally anticipated. I had originally intended on presenting the trends of presidential elections, however, it is mention but no longer my main focus. I have focused more so on how to speech effectively.

I feel I am making progress with my project number 5. I think it is coming together but needs more work. I dont have very many ideas for improvements but I am sure that after recieveing my rough draft I will be able to polish it to fit the goals of this project.

Evaluation

I feel like I have a good sense of where I'm going in this project. I think that my project still needs some work. My advertisement needs more pictures or just a better picture to get peoples attention in general. I need to make it more flashy I think. Also I need to think of maybe a better mission statement. I don't know if I like the one I have.
Questions I have:
On my poster board that I am going to do; how big does the poster board have to be?
When we present am I persuading the class as if they were my target audience?
How does our presentation have to be?

Self-Evaluation: Final Project

Write a 1-2 paragraph evaluation about where your final project is as of today. If you have any questions, ask them here.

Project Cinco...

I plan on doing a case briefing for the last project of the semester. I will present it like a lawyer would to a courtroom. It is possible that I may even do a current case that has not been decided yet and make my own ruling on it. I could pick a current topic like the OJ Simpson case (the new one). Everyone loves OJ! I am still thinking about other ideas at this point but am getting closer to the final decision on a presentation median.
I am going to use a power point presentation for my final project. This type of presentation is used in the business field a lot and would be appropriate for me to use as well. I am not sure exactly how I am going to use it, but I know that it will play a key role.

Final Presentation

I will be discussing about how the economy from specific areas will affect the Malls. I will give examples of how malls became struggling and deceased malls. Most of my presentation will consist of slides, however before I start talking about malls I will show the audience a picture that I painted in my Junior year in highschool that's called a "Tribute to North Towne". I ask the audience to go to Wikipedia because I will give some my refrence from my presentation from some of the logs that have been summitted. I intend to have this as the funnest presenation by having all of my audience participate. I garuantee that if some one has a comment or question it will certainly be answered. Unlike other presentations in this class I intend this presentation to be built by the audience, and not from the usual right and present. (This doesn't mean that I will not put forth my full effort for writing this project) However if no one participates I will have a backup plan for presenting as a monotone if necessary. Hopefully it will not come to that. Please post any comments if you have any concerns about this issue and I will be happy to respond to you.

Presentation idea/brainstorm

For my final project presentation, i am planning to use power point with both pictures and words on the slides. I am not sure what exactly the slides will contain, but i am thinking that each will break down my project #5 but in a more visual way to get the audience interested.

Presentation

In reviewing and brainstorming for my final presentation for project #5 I am leaning on a public address and speech format but, am still unsure of whether or not to use any technology resources or not. I am debating about possibly using a powerpoint application in addition to my speech presentation because I feel that it may reinforce and make the presentation stronger. I am hoping to make this presentation as dynamic and appropriate as I can using whatever resources an methods are available.

presentation

I plan to do a powerpoint presentation, mabe a side from youtube. I would like to present the class with my political journal and introduce rhetoric trends in past and current presidential elections.

Project thoughts

Some final thoughts for the final presentation are possibly a power point, or if accessable I would try to find a brief summarized report of the field electronically. The goal would be to make a step by step manual of the specifics and what it would take to be successful in this business.

Presentation

I have no idea what I am going to do for my presentation but I am leaning towards technology to help me present it, I just don't know how I am going to do it. My project # 5 is a lesson plan for a high school English class to write a career research paper. I just don't think there is much to present on that that is interesting.

Presentation Plans

1. PowerPoint Presentation
+Video clip of teacher in classroom

2. Teach a lesson
+ Create lesson plan
+ Pass out handout of homework (math worksheet)

3. Speech
+Handout...
+Video clip...

These are the ways of presenting that I am considering. I am not sure if 2 is acceptable, but that is the one I am leaning more towards. If 2 isn't acceptable, I will do 1. Number 3 would be my last choice. I don't like to stand in front of people and just talk.

Presentation Idea

For my presentation, I will be using visual aides. As of now, I will be creating 3 original 'ads' and then also creating 3 more images (ie: ad1 in a magazine, ad2 on a billboard, etc.) to portray those 'ads'. I will then use a PowerPoint presentation to go through each of these images to explain what about them relates to the form of public relations and promotions. I might be able to pull a video clip (not made by me) that would go along with the concept of my class project but I'm not sure yet if one will be available by my presentation date.

self evaluation

The reason that I made the wiki entry the way that I did was because I felt it was more informative, and helped walk the readers through the process that I chose to use. I hope the example that I used was understandable as well as fitting the discourse of my major field.

self-evaluation

I edited the wiki entry the way I did to give it more substance. I wanted to put in quotes from important literary figures like Mark Twain to expand the entry of language arts. I also wanted to look at this term from a teaching perspective.

self-evaluation

i edited and created this wiki entry the way i did because the previous post did not go into much detail about the working conditions as well as education requirements for people who are interested in insurance claims. i find the claims adjuster career interesting and exciting and i hope that i was able to express that in my editing of the wiki.

Self Evaluation

I created the entry that I did because I felt there was a need for people to know who Romona Robinson was. I saw that there was not an entry for this particular news caster. I still am having issues with getting it approved but I do have the entry done. She was a newscaster that did many significant things and won many awards so therefore I had plenty of information to put inside of the entry.

self evaluation

I edited the wikipedia page Teaching Methods. I wanted to edit this page because it was in dire need of help. It lacked information and citations. I edited in the way that I did because it was factual, helpful, and informative. The site barely had any information at all. It was like I created the page instead of only editing it.

Wikipedia Post

The reason I edited the Wikipedia page for Public Relations the way I did was easy: I wanted to keep things simple and straight to the point. The original document I had written up contained, after reading it again, more of my personal opinions about things and scenarios which probably shouldn't be included since people are seeking facts on the website and not opinions. Even though I thought I edited with decent, factual information...someone re-edited in the wee hours of the morning and deleted my information.

Wikipedia Self-Evaluation

I edited the Event planning entry on wikipedia because this is the particular career that i hope to have one day. The page did not have much but a paragraph on wikipedia so i expanded the page by adding details on how to break into the business, steps to event planning, working conditions, and networking. I created it in a way where first people could learn a little abou the event planning career then give more details as to what one should need in order to be an event planner. i think my edit was succussful because it is easy to read and pretty straight forward and has factual information about the business.

Wikipedia addition: Legal English

I decided to add a section called "Style Explanation" to the wikipedia topic "Legal English." I did this for a few reasons. First, the individual that made the page origionally did not talk about the style of language people use in the legal community. They mostly talked about the history and specific grammatical issues. I believe that style is important when analyzing a discourse community. Secondly, most importantly, it is necessary to explain why the legal community communicates the way they do. It is nice to point how lawyers and judges differ from the rest of the community when it comes to language. It is even more important to explain why there exists a difference from the rest of the community.

Self-Evaluation

The reasons for why I chose to edit the wiki entry the way I did was because I wanted to use the closest form of language to the wiki style that was reflected in the entry that I had edited. The style was loose and informative and I carefully imitated this style the best I could for this. I chose to edit the Public Speaking entry because it pertains to my career interest and is relevant to my major. I also felt that there was very little information about public speaking on the wiki entry and it was easier to edit for that page. I felt that the entry itself needed improvement and I am confident that my contribution was helpful.

Self Evaluation Post

I edited the North Towne Square Mall entry because I found it quite difficult to put up a new entry. Mainly because it took too long to approve and it was constantly being denied. I found that while editing North Towne Square mall, I learned the painful financial history that it went through during the years, and what the people planning on doing it with its property. In my opinion I though I did very good on discribing the history on North Towne Square mall.

This pertained to my last paper by describing how accounting can financially predict the death on the business. The main thesis of this report was that economically numbers made from the society can either create or destroy a business based upon how much they decide to purchase.
My original main goal for my last paper that I tried to do was describe the different areas in the business world so that the people who are try to get sucessful jobs can see where there going. This report teaches people what a unsuccessful business looks like, and advises them when to close their shop when necessary.

self evaluation

I chose to create the wikipedia page that I did because it was one that I thought would be useful to many people. I would have utilized the page early in the year for one of my classes, had it been created. I chose to make it look like the other supreme court cases that were posted on wikipedia. This would allow people to be able to go from page to page and know what to expect. Many of the people who will use my Wikipedia page will be trying to brief the case. I created the page to flow like a case brief so that it would be very helpful.

Self-Eval

I edited the wikipedia entry I did because it was something that tied to my career field and I had previously done research on it. I found a section on the web page that pertained to achievement gap strategies and saw that it lacked strategies that teachers can use to help close the achievement gap. I already had information on more strategies to use to I decided to expand the entry that was already there with what I had done research on previously.

Self-Evaluation

I wanted to say first and really quick that when I started this assignment I wasn't really sure about what I was doing and getting frustrated because I didn't think I would have anything to contribute. Now that I finished my paper and posted it to the Wikipedia I feel pretty excited that I got to contribute to someone else who wants to learn about Insulin Pumps. I posted the listing insulin pump under the term Intensive Insulinotherapy. The insulin pump is a treatment device used in this Intensive Insulintherapy. I thought that it tied in well with the rest of the Wiki entry that I added on to. I also posted my entry at the end so that people can first learn about he treatment then learn about the device.

revision

At this moment I am thinking about additional things to add to my wikipedia page to better enhance it. Still trying to focus exactly what I am trying to say.

2nd Wednesday post

I still need to submit to you my rough draft, so I have no feedback from you. The peer workshop only helped some because I was confused of what to do for the project. I got help and a little more understanding of the project as a whole. The discussion for my entries page lacks information and conversation. One person states on the discussion that "this page needs help". I agree with this user and hopefully I can do so. My edit will be on the entry of Teaching Methods.

Revision Plans

I plan on revising my paper to fit the format of wikipedia and less academic. I feel that although I have done much research, I need to apply it to my cite. Also I need to decide what will go on which part(s) of the wiki, such as history, discussion, etc. and how i want to present it and what i feel the audience needs most.

Wednesday post

The entry is short as of now. It can be edited with the addition of facts and information. Reading through the history and discussion, others too agree that there needs more information. One person stated that the page needs “help”. The lack of already present information doesn’t help me with revisions on draft 4.

Revision Plan

In my next draft I am going to expand with even more research. My first draft seemed slightly limited in the sense of researched information. Also I am going to put more current trends in it. With a little more detail and more specific elpanations I believe I will have a great paper.

Revision Plans

After looking at my rough draft and deciding what to do to improve the revision of this project, the main thing that I will change for this essay will definitely be giving more specific details and citing sources that I take my information from. I feel after I do this the wikipedia revision will be easier to edit and make more sense when read. I am also going to doublecheck on citations and specificity the most with this assignment.

Revisions

I'm unsure about changes, considering I wasn't here, nor did I submit my rough draft electronically for critiquing. So as far as I'm concerned, I'll be talking to Elizabeth (and probably my neighbor, who just loves to have ideas bounced off of her) to figure out what my next moves will be entailing.

2nd response for Wed.

To revise my draft i think i just need to work on making sure my sources are cited right. it seems that is a big aspect of whether the post will stay up on wikipedia or not. I am also going to focus my entry a bit more with more detail into the field. Also the usual grammar aspect i will look over also.

Revision Plans

after reading your comments, I plan to go into a little more detail about certain parts of my post. I wrote the post assuming that the readers would know little details about the case. I plan to incorporate more information so that someone will be able to look at the post and understand it without any prior knowledge. I also need to format the headings that I include to look like other cases that are already posted.

Revision Plans

I plan to make the usual grammar and spelling revisions along with trying to put some more length into my essay. I have a lot of work to do on my essay and I'm hoping that I will be able to post it on Wikiapedia. I also need to work on the choice of wording that is used in the essay. since Wiki likes everything to be straight forward I need to revise my word choice.

Today's 2nd Response

I am still unsure of how I will revise my paper. The only thing I can say is I will try to make it more Wikipedia friendly. I think, for the most part, the essay is formatted correctly, I just have to make sure that it is more to the point like Wikipedia posts tend to be.

essay #4

After recieving feedback from you I have a few revision changes that I need to make in order for essay #4 to be complete. I need to work on the organization part alot in my essay and add my sources to it to back up my claims. I plan on revising it again this week, then hopefully get more feedback from you and turn it in wednesday for the final. Other than that, I just need to sit down and do it.

Response

This is for today's response for Mon. After looking at my page, I learned that it really focuses on examples of public relations but doesn't really go into extreme detail about exactly what it is.

Wednesday Response

After researching the wikipedia page on public speaking, I found that there was not very much that I could do to edit the "discussion" page. However the history and other sections had plenty of space that could have text added into it. Researching this and the other bibliography page I have was helpful in my decisions to edit those pages.

Revision Plans

After getting feedback from a peer and me, and looking at the discussion page on Wikipedia, summarize your plans for revision for your Essay #4.

--ejfleitz

the history

I didnt learn much in my history section on political discourse because there wasnt much there. I feel that I need to expand on the history on my cite. The discussion portion of my cite was more explanatiory, however, it can also be expanded.

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Wednesday's Response

I feel that I learned alot from my peers (whether if they were in my group or online). As I reviewed the posts online I felt that there were some that were too brief that needed some editing, and others that had really good amplified language in discribing the definition to the public. Even though some people feel that it's easier to add than to create a new blog, I feel that you are being inventing than learning about the material just like what we reviewed on Monday. Another thing to consider is that by Adding new terms to the blog you are further educating the world on how the world operates, but with new additions to old terms you are not really educating the world. The reason is because more people are more likely to know about old term and how they work (even if the analysis are posted or not), where as new terms are more likely to help society in there future career goals. I feel that by reviewing my Essay #4 with you, I will get even more closer to where I want to be for my report.

Oct/30/2007

I learned a lot by reading up on outside websites that had information on it about insuln pump thearpy. This has helped me to revise my essay more. Insulin pump therapy is more of a treatment for diabetes to children, young persons and adults. The more you know the better you can write your essay. I would recommend using as many outside sources as possible.

Wednesday Wikipedia Post

Although I am not editing an existing page, I did look at page that is comparable to what I will post. From the history, I learned that it is very important that I create headings to divide up the information on the page. I also found out that it is very important to fully explain all aspects of the court case that I post. A lot of people who get onto Wikipedia are unaware of the details that go into certain cases. I need to make my post clear so that anyone can read it and understand what was said.

wikipeida search on event planning

I went to the "talk" page for event planning and i found that a few other people posted and have been looking for information on how event planning started. I havent found much research on that but i think i will try to look harder for some. One person mentioned using software as a section, but another person responded how that is not unversal for everyone and that is not what event planning is about, it is about communcation and actual planning of the event. I think that i will not focus on the software aspect of it, but in the entry i will focus more on the aspect of planning event and skills that one would need to be in this profession. There was not much on the talk page so i think i will go mostly from what research i have found and what seems to be important in the event planning career field.

Wednesday-Wikipedia

When searching my history and discussion page on wikipedia I noted several findings about the achievement gap. My Article was first dated back to October 2004 and last edited October 18, 2007. Something that I found interesting on the discussion page was the main person who created this entry wants to create a debate with both sides of the argument on whether anything is being done to close the achievement gap. This person believes that some have no interest to close the gap while others do. In my essay #4, I came up with strategies that people can use to close the gap and in my findings everyone was discussing how important it is to close the gap. I think that I can help to contribute to this entry by giving the side of how to close the gap/why it's important to do so.

Monday, October 29, 2007

Response for Wednesday: Wikipedia

After searching on Wikipedia for your entry's discussion and history pages, report back to this blog about what you learned. Summarize the kinds of things the discussion talked about (what are people suggesting to be edited with the entry?), and discuss how/if reading the discussion and history pages helped you revise or focus your Essay #4 draft.

peer feedback

By talking with you, Michelle and I are more clear about the direction of this assingment. I have more work to complete, but I think the best route is to edit an existing topic, rather than starting a new one.

Peer Feedback

There was a lot of confusion for me on this essay so I didn't recieve a lot of feedback, but did recieve help and clarification for the project.

Feedback for Essay 4

The feedback that I received for this paper was helpful and especially was useful for me in expanding more on what I could add and finish for the final draft. The peer evaluation of my paper was good for helping me pinpoint what I needed to change and have edited for the final draft.

Peer Feedback

It was good getting the feedback from my peers on essay 4. I need to add how the legal community uses latin in their speech and writing as well as the other things I have already mentioned.

In class peer workshop

Having a class member review my work helped to reveal the weak areas of my paper. I know that I need to expand on certain aspect to make my post clear to people who are not familiar with the topic.

How helpful was this?

Somewhat helpful

Progress on essay 4

Project 4 is a bit confusing to me. I have never posted or edited to wikipedia before. I was cruising around the site and it still seems blurry of how to post to it. The information that I have collected from essay 3 and further research is coming along well though. My rough draft is short and sketchy. It needs a lot of work, but I think after the peer workshop I'll have a better handle on things... hopefully.

Progress Essay #4

Essay #4 is coming along well; I found it difficult to narrow down a subject within my field that I am interested in writing about, but I have a good start and my ideas are starting to come together. I am going to be focusing on the study of the role of non-verbal language within my discourse community. Wikipedia already has an entry for non-verbal communication, which has allowed me a starting point for analysis. I am trying to expand on the definition of non-verbal communication and to include its study in my discourse community.
I feel lost on this assignment. I am not sure I am on track with what you are looking for. It was very hard to find topics on wikipedia that are not already covered, so I expanded on the dance competition entry to add dance conventions and workshops. I found it very difficult to find sources for this information. Most of the knowledge is either common knowledge or not cited anywhere. I know I need to come up with more cited information from accurate sources.

progress

I feel that this assignment is almost impossible. There is nothing that I can bring to Wiki that is new to the table. I did my essay on an insulin pump specialist. Then there is the fact that I don't know how long to make my essay. If i make it longer than one page then its repetitive and boring. So I guess that I'm not really that happy with my progress so far.

Self Evaluation

I feel that I am doing okey for this project. However I am having a hard time with wikipedia convincing them that I am not plagerising. I know technically I am not because I am giving reference to the site when I post my draft. I would like to discuss about this further during the office hours.

Progress on Essay #4

I have been finding information and preparing for the final draft right now. I had some difficulties getting the rough draft started with what to add into he entries. I chose to edit a page rather than create my own page. The references and sources I have considered using are sources that I used for essay #3 which are relevant to what I am writing for the final draft.

progress

I dont feel like im truely entering my discourse community but someone who is studying. Ive learned much and look forward to learning more. This assignment has been fine so far, it is challenging, however, to convert to an academic style other than the "standard essay"

Progress for Essay #4 Draft

I feel that i have a good start to essay #4 i feel as though i could re word my sentences a little bit and add in some more information. i think your feedback always helps, i know there are some things i can change and work on a bit more before i submit it to wikipedia.

Friday's Post

When Bartholomae says to "invent the university" I believe he is stating that a student creates their own experiences throughout their college career. Students may or may not use sources (library, professors, study centers, or other students) to make their experiences the best. How ever they go about inventing the university, everyone's is different. It is a possibility that students in the same major may have close to the same experiences, but nothing is ever exact.
He uses the word invent rather than learn because you learn from mistakes and he doesn't want the experiences of a univeristy to be exactly a learning experience, although it is he wants it to be created and to the best of your ability. Student inventing is learning the knowledge (past, present, and future) of your discourse community.

Essay 4

I think that my paper is off to a good start on essay 4. Since I am making a brand new wikipedia entry, it may be a little too brief. I tried to focus on bringing the summarized points from essay 3 into this paper. I might want to bring in some more sourcing to better elaborate. I enjoy my topic and am learning a lot about it. It will be good to have some feedback to see if I am pointed in the right direction on this project.
Things are going good so far. I think I have a goo start on project #4. I know I still need to brush it up a little before I post it on Wikipedia, but I think I am on the right track. Your feedback always helps, so I will make the corrections that you suggest.

Invent the University

I feel invent the university means to recreate the university to fit to yourself. My invention of the University is going to be different from everyone elses invention of the University. It is a composition of experiences that help to form your idea's of success and the means you use to get you there. He uses the word invent because in a sense you are the creater of the experieces you encounter.

Firday post

When the article dicusses "inventing the university," I think the author means that one has to be creative and invent different ways of functioning in the new discourse community. When one first enters the university setting he or she does not know all the proper ways of interacting. A person must "invent" ways of being a part of the community until he or she learns how to do so.

Invent the University

I think "invent the university" means that you need to learn the system of the university. You need to be able to figure out how to use the academic setting and apply it to your future career and goals. By "inventing the university," you learn to take advantage of the help of teachers, alumnai, fellow students, etc. and notice other opportunities to advance and network within your career field.

Bartholomae Response

The Bartholomae essay for class is an essay that talks about "inventing the university". What this means I believe is that university students upon entering a type of "discourse community", they manage to make their way through this community by picking up what they learn and going along using observations and thus the student sort of "creates" their environment or language in a particular situation. This seems to be common with students that are unfamiliar to a new area of study and its discourse community.

Inventing the University

I think that what Bartholomae means by using the phrase "invent the university" is a term that a lot of people can find themselves doing at college or in their life. I think it means that even though you may not be particularly apart of a certain discourse or know what something means is that you need to "invent" ways to get yourself through that particular task, such as writing a simple paper for english when you may be a math major. You may not always know what every assignment means, but you make it through it by breaking it into steps that allow you to learn as you go along to complete the task.

Bartholomae Reading

When Bartholomae says to "invent the university" he means that the student needs to move into the world of the university step by step using different ways of thinking, arguing and establishing authority. The student needs to take on the role of the authority that they are going to be. He means that the student has to apply what they are learing and have learned and be able to use it in their working and everyday lives when they are done with college. the student is inventing their future with using all the different and complicated ways of thinking and aruging in a college setting. The student must take ideas and push theselves to think as an expert is thinking, the student is inventing their future and what their lives will later be like.

fridays response

David Bartholomae's quote "invent the university" means that you use what you learned at college in your real life. You are going to be in the real working world and when you are there in order to make a different you need to invent ideas and thoughts and then incorporate them into your everyday working life. Youre not learning something you are thinking of something or Inventing"something! This is a competative world.

Friday's response

David Bartholomae's quote "invent the university" means that you apply the terminology and presentation skills that you learned in the university, into new ways of thinking in your everyday life in order for you to get to you where you want to go in life. This is hard for me because in my department of studies, (excluding entrepreneurship) you "learn" more than you "invent". Even though you learn new material like "Business Angel" and "Boolean" the exams that are given to you by the professors don't like being creative and prefer having the "right" statement due to their discourse community.

The student is inventing a new way how to perceive clay. In the students case he transformed the general geographic model of earth into the amplified geographic model of earth by specifically studying the whole area of the earth. David Bartholomae taught us that you do not have to be "God" to come up with something new, you just have to rethink the question and support it with new material that you have learned. In my concurrence on this issue, I have a better understanding of my education by challenging my "wrong" answer and explaining why its right by "inventing" like what the student did, as opposed to "learning" like what the average basic professor politely snubbing you based upon what the "book" said.

The reason why he uses the word "invent," rather than "learn" is because he is taking the readers to another level in the College education field. I understand from what David Bartholomae saying in general is that anyone can "learn", but only the true geniuses in the world know how to take what they have "learned" and "invent" something new. Historically the people who "invent" are honored and remembered academically not by their own knowledge, but by how their "inventions" affected and helped the societies way of thinking and operating. Historically we call these people "inventors", but today we refer to these people something else which are "entreprenuers". You don't need to be in business to rethink your new ideas, you can also be in law as well. The reason why so many cases and laws are changed is because of how people percieve the law for that case and test the constitution to see if its qualified to really be a law by "inventing" rather than abiding by them like "learning".

In my project I plan to "invent" from the materials of Wikipedia, a new page for Edward Jones Company as opposed to supporting and "learn" from the materials on Wikipedia existing page. I feel that this is beneficial to me because someday I want to start my own business with a help of some loan officers so that I can truely be a honorable employer, as opposed to average employee in the business world. I feel that the more that I do and complete projects by myself the better off I will be in the long run because it will teach me the discipline of handling personal situations when they arise.

Response for Friday: Inventing the University

What does it mean, as Bartholomae says, to "invent the university"? Why does he use the word "invent," rather than "learn"? What, exactly, is the student inventing?

project status

I feel like I am on a good pace with my paper. I think that the research that I put in to my project is really helping me out. There was a good portion of this information that I was aware of. With what I had already known, the most recent information that I will use has some interesting facts on insurance sales and the main points staying consistant. I honestly feel like I am on a good pace to be ready to earn a good grade.

Paper #3 Progress

I have read all the teacher comments on my first rough draft, and trasfered the correction to my paper. I have written a full rough draft and am currently doing another peer evaluation. I plan on finishing my final draft this week, tho there is still some things I want to research and maybe change or add to my paper.

Progress On 3

I am working on my paper for monday, I need to restructure my paper so that it will focus more so on the how my discourse works and not so much on the what. Also I have attempted to work on my annotated bibliography but my efforts have not been promising. This assignment has proved to be a challenging one, interesting but putting it all together is different

Progess

I have made good progress since my rough draft. I really started to add quotes from people already involved in the law field to back up my observations on the language of law. I focused on the elaboration of each idea and explaining why people in my field communicate the way they do. I need to gather at least 2 more sources to fit the requirment for the bibliography. This paper has proved to be challenging since I am still very far away from being a true member of this discourse community.

#3

I've looked over the comments made about my rough draft and need to fix my paper's structrure. I need to also stop focusing on what teachers teach and more look at how they discourse.
I am working on correcting the things that you suggested for project number 3. I am in the middle of my bibliography. I still need to go back and revise my paper once more before I turn it in.

Progress on Paper #3

So far, I have reviewed your comments on my rough draft and have begun to re-arrange some elements of my paper. I am almost finished, but could use to go back and add some connecting sentences between sources and my personal information.

Progress on Project #3

As of the moment I am currently in the process of finishing my final draft for project 3 which will be turned in on Monday. I have been utilizing websites and some other book sources for citation and the annotated bibliography. So far the essay's rough draft has been completed and criticized and ready for editing. The sources that I have chosen to use for this essay relate to subject matter that pertains to my chosen career field and have been cited appropriately in the essay. Overall the progress of my essay has been completing the rough draft and preparing for the final essay.

Project #3 update

I feel that I am doing well with my project. I am not sure that I will be 100% perfect for my draft that I will hand in on Monday, however I feel that if I keep revising my document under your amplified comments, I will be where I want to be. The only question that I have is when are your hours that you are available on the weekend?

Essay #3 progress

On my essay #3 I am working on shifting my thoughts more towards on how event planners communicate. I am just working on trying to focus my essay bettter, trying to focus on the comuncation aspects rather than the job itself. I was having difficylty at first but feel I have a better grasp on where my paper should go. I am still trying to find one last good source, but I think I am on my way to finishing my final sucussfuly.

Essay #3

I completed my revisions for essay 3 last night so I'm all done. I worked on completing the bibliography but I might want to make some changes to that between now and then, not sure about it.

Progress Report: Friday, Oct. 19

In a paragraph, discuss your progress thus far in Project #3. Keeping in mind the final draft is due on Monday, what do you know you need to do between now and Monday morning? Furthermore, what questions do you have?

Wednesday posting

When I look at Wikipedia it is difficult for me to even tell that their site is edited by ordinary people. Therefore I compliment them on the good job there doing to patrol that particular area of their site. Also I would like to add that I think they have enough content alone that you dont even need to see the people content.

wikipedia patrolling

There are people who “patrol” the wikipedia site. If an error is detected, the finder is able to correct the mistake as soon as possible. They are also able to change something that is false or inappropriate. It is difficult to find the author of the posts because there are many places able to receive postings and many people who post under unknown or anonymous names.

Wednesday

Yes there are people who patrol wikipedia. They scan to search for offensive or false information. Wikipedia does this so that it does not become more like Siegenthaler. The scanning helps wikipedia become a more credible source and this helps with its popularity because as it becomes more credible, teachers and schools will be more friendly about using it

Wikipedia Response

In response to the wikipedia question, I agree that the wikipedia site is doing what they can to monitor the ways that the site is edited and touched upon. From the essay and sample clip dealing with the issue, it is clearly addressed that there is much concern about the way that the site is being handled. Maybe it's not the best thing ti have a site that is as accesible to being edited by virtually anyone but, it should be monitored that best way possible so that still retains credibility.

Response on Wikipedia

Although wikipedia is a patroled site, and does allow users the options to correct errors when found, wikipedia was never an acceptable site to use as a source when doing assignments. I
never really understood why this was not a credible source until doing the readings.

Although wikipedia allows falsifications to be revised, I feel that the fact that these errors are even allowed on a site, that is widely used, in the first place may make the site seem incredible. I feel that even though this site is patroled, it does still allow for false information to make it onto the system. Because of this one may think that the site is biased, or they may see that just like any site, mistakes are made.

I feel one's perception of this site really just depends on the viewers. I personally have always been told to not use wikipedia, but when doing small research for myself, I have never had problems finding the information I need.

Wiki 10/16/07

When looking on the Wiki's site I found that there are people called administers that overlook the site for any false information and/or things that just shouldn't be on there. These people have special rights to the site that no one else has. I think that their are more than just a few people who have these rights too because without many people it would take someone forever to look through all of the information that Wiki provides. My question is are these administers make money off the site?

Wednesday Post

Anyone can edit information on Wikipedia but there are 1,000 users with "special powers" that try and keep control of things that are posted in line with Wikipedia's guidelines and policies. I'm not sure if they specifically look for false claims but I'm sure if something is reported or if they come across something incorrect, they step in to try and correct it. If someone finds biased or incorrect information, they can either report it or alter it themselves.
Wikipedia has officers that patrol the site for incorrect information. At any time, a user can report a problem and make a request to edit the site with correct information.

Wikipedia

When searching the site of wikipedia I found that they do have administrators that patrol/monitor the site with what is posted/edited on there. Under the about section of wikipedia where it discusses contributors, I found the following: Over 1,000 administrators with special powers ensure that behavior conforms to Wikipedia guidelines and policies. When a few situations are still unresolved after all other consensus remedies have failed, a judicial committee steps in and decides to withdraw or restrict editing privileges or to take other corrective measures. So this just proves that there are people who are trying to make sure that what goes onto the site is truthful and appropriate.

Wikipedia "patrol"

Yes, there are people who "patrol" the site and look for false claims. On the "About-Wikipedia" page they claim that anyone who see intentional vandalism, can be reported or corrected immediately. Wikipedia works hard to be a credible site and they don't want their information to be wrong or criticized. I am sure will all the millions of entries on wikipeida it is hard to catch every detail of false information as found in the Siegenthaler article. It is a good system that users can report the problem fast and have it fixed. If a user finds biased information they can report it and find information of their own and post so the entry is unbiased. I think in the NPR audio clip, i found it interesting that they were saying a lot of the entries were liberal. I am sure in their opinion there are biased entries on wikipidea. If you are just a reader and you find a biased entry you don't agree with then that person should edit the entry themselves and give more information to the entry.

Wednesday Wikipedia Post

Wikipedia does have people who "patrol" the site, looking for errors or bias entries. The people who do so are those who go onto the site to look up information or post information. Wikipedia entries are available to be edited at anytime. If someone finds something that is wrong in an entry, they are able to correct it right away. Wikipedia also allows people to site their information so that others who read the entries can determine the validity of the posts.

The people who add entries to the site do not want it to be full of useless information. They take pride in what they post and do their best to make it a credible site. So, the people who police wikipedia are you and me.

Wednesday's Wacky Wikipedia Response

Yes there are people who "patrol" the Wikipedia site and look for false claims. People or "patrolers"who have accounts on Wiki can easily make changes to anything that they do not approve of. Whether if its massivley offensive and slanderous to society in it's legal terms like what John Seigenthaler experienced from the Wiki-users or minorily offensive to some people based upon their own personal beliefs just like what Andy thought of the "Ghost rider" Article. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ghost_ride)

It is clear that Wikipedia is trying the best it can to locate its people who write these slanderous posts, like the ones made in the Siegenthaler article and the NPR audio clip. Its very difficult to locate the people who posts stuff because you do not know who posted what in what area. Even though you do know someone did edit the site due to the users blog. Even though you are more likely to locate any discourse community, it may never really be accurate due to many innacurate or non-up-to-date responses.

Response for Wednesday: Wikipedia and Bias

After reading both the Siegenthaler essay and listening to the NPR audio clip, search Wikipedia again to find out how the site deals with bias or incorrect information. Are there people who "patrol" the site and look for false claims? What can users do if they find wrong or biased info? Basically, what is Wikipedia doing to react to claims like the ones made in the Siegenthaler article and the NPR audio clip?

Wikipedia

I found wikipedia to be an extremely useful tool. This is a particular site that I had never been on before. I searched Presidential candidates, and the content that I got was awesome. The thing that caught my eye was current events they gave me as well as explanations for Presidential candidates.

Wiki

Two main characteristics that an effective Wikipedia entry would have are some sort of writing protection like the main page which can only be edited by administration or as in the case with Al Gore’s page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Gore
Where it is semi-protected and only registered users my change the page. This allows for better control on who can edit the page and to prevent vandalism to popular pages.
Another characteristic are clear citations on where the information on the Wikipedia entry are from. This gives credibility to the page and also offers other sources to research the topic.

Monday's Response

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/college_football One characteristic I found effective was the graphic use of photos. The illustrative pictures kept me captivated and interested in messages and history of football. Another effective aspect of the site I found effective was the links to history, the beginnings or roots to football and key players of the history.

Monday Response

The entry that I entered into the wikipedia website was http://en.www.wikipedia.org/w. iki/film. After checking this entry and some of its features, I found that some of its most important feature included the title information and the external links page. I feel that these two features are two of the most important ones to look into when checking out an entry in wikipedia. One of the features is a detailed history of whatever the subject is while the external links section is list of website links that are arranged in no particular order and vary in length. Both of these features allow users that are researching or browsing the subject to have easily organized access to whatever it is they are researching.

Wiki and T.V

I looked up the work T.V and wiki came back with an abundant amount of information for me to read up on. I think the two most important aspect that the site should provide information on is the history and for this particular entry, the technology. The definition is also an important aspect of this site since it is somewhere people go to get information on just about anything. I go to this site on a regular basis for school and when writing papers. I provided the link to the website and topic which I chose.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tv

Wickipedia characteristics

I looked at the Wikipedia entry on mobile phones. On effective characterstic that an entry should have is the history it gives on the chosen entry. For example in the mobile phone entry there is good significant background information on how cell phones have progressed throughout the years and what companies originaged the idea of having cell phones.
Another effective characteristic that an entry should have is the "See Also" section, it is very helpful and effective for those people who need more sources or are needing other information on reltated topics. For example for the mobile Phone entry it says to see also missed call, fil phone, dropped call, cell broadcast, mobile learning and other related topics. These two criteria i believe are important to helping have a well developed wikipedia entry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_phones#Manufacturers

Wikipedia Post

1. One characteristic of an effective Wikipedia post is that there are links to other posts on the Wikipedia site. This allows people to click on words that are in a post that they may not understand and learn what the words mean. For example, I clicked on the Smashing Pumpkins post. Within the post, the date October 5, 1988 was referenced. I had no clue what happened on this day in history. I was able to click on the date and I was transferred to another post all about the date October 5, 1988.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smashing_Pumpkins

2. Another characteristic of an effective Wikipedia post is that the post provides more than just a definition of the word, date, or event. The post provides background history, current information, and relevant topics having to do with the content of the post. For example, I clicked on the link to "heavy metal." Within this post there was information about the history of heavy metal, how it was influenced, chords, and themes all surrounding the topic of heavy metal.

Paris Hilton and Wikipedia

A good article on "Wikipedia" would have the majority of people having a good explanation on the history of a specific person and their events (whether if its good or bad) on the "Main Page". A good example would be about Paris Hiltons' unethical and illegal acts toward society through out the years. This type of page in "Wikipedia" could be a nice educational item, because it could be used to study Paris' Case and used in such courses as POLS 330 or LEGS 300. There is alot of "discussions" about the Paris Hiltons' case and what events needed to be changed and updated about the case. I believe that Wikipedia should include accurate timeline information and sections of serious events (whether if its beneficial or damaging to that particular person who you are researching). Both of these characteristics are important because if you were to hire or invest your assets in such people as Paris Hilton you would need to know the whole truth before you invest your time and money in Paris or her business plans that she has at that time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Hilton

DISSENTING NOTE: One bad thing about Wikipedia that some college professors and k-12 teachers dislike this webiste is that people can change any post, anytime, and anywhere. This might lead to cases about defemation (libel about lying while writing, and slander about lying while giving presentations) in some situations due to wrong or malice posts on the website.

Response for Monday: Wikipedia

After doing the readings for Monday, go to http://www.wikipedia.org and choose a random entry. Explore the features provided on this entry page, especially look at the different tabbed sections ("main page," "discussion," "view source," "history," etc.). From this exploration, come up with two main characteristics that an effective Wikipedia entry would have. When you mention your characteristic, explain by providing an example (and don't forget to link from here to the entry you chose).

Alex's essay

My initial reaction to this paper is good. It is well organized and gives a well rounded description of the public speaking discourse community. The strength’s I noticed were all of the resources used. It really helped to back your paper up when I saw a lot of research done. The research seemed credible too. The weakness noticed in the paper is length. It is long enough, but with more examples and issues discussed in your paper, with more research, your paper could really come around. I’m not suggesting more research to be done, but further in depth. Maybe discuss a few more issues or so. When reading the paper aloud, it sounded good. It wasn’t boring either. It held my attention. I am now more informed about this discourse community: public speaking.

Brandon Evaluation

Brandon had got a good start on his essay. His thesis was extremely clear. He emailed me the paper and I was able to evaluate it electronically and email him what I had thought. The rough draft was not finished but by the amount that was done I was able to see exactly where the paper was going and give him some constructive criticism. I suggested to him that he find and use some more sources to find some more information.

Kay's Display of Writing

Kay is off to a wonderful start, but she just needs to beef up her essay with some more research. Actually, I have some sources to email her to help with that. Other than that, she has a strong basis and good ideas to build off of. I know she was having some problems with finding sources for her research as much as I was, and I completely understand trying to build up from a weak foundation, but she is definately succeeding. We were confused on the format for quotes longer than 2 lines in MLA documentation. Is it single spaced and the margin indented 1/2 an inch? If anybody knows, PLEASE COMMENT! Thanks.

-Carly

Julie's Essay

I felt that the paper was a good start for this essay and was a good rough draft for the education community discourse. I feel that after some more research and organization, the essay will be ready to be finalized. I would probably format the paper differently and edit the organization than it will definitely be ready to be delivered. Nice job on this paper though.

Carly's Essay

I feel that Carly has a good start, i know she is having trouble finding really good research material but her paper is off to a great start with some concrete research about her discourse community. We got some good feedback from eachother she helped me figure out a couple more sources and things i could improve upon. I think she will have a strong essay on the discourse community she has chosen.

Chris-Eval

I evaluated Chris's essay and the big thing that I noticed was that he needs to reduce his introduction and focus more on the main topic of this essay. In that intro there needs to be a thesis to build on and to help stay on topic throughout the rest of the essay. In this essay it's important to discuss why your field is a discourse in the research that you have found and support it. Once you got past that, the sources that he has so far are good, just needs to build some more. I think that once he builds on his sources that he has his paper will take great shape.

Group Evaluation

I think that both of me and my group member did a great job evaluating my draft. I found out that we both had problems setting up our paper. My group member had focused more on the law than here career field, just like I focused more on my academic setup than my career field. We also had trouble finding sources for our project as well. We both think that we should have feedback from you immidiately before we move any further with our project.

Peer Workshop for Erin

Erin's paper was very well developed for a rough draft. She explored all the realms of language need to fully articulate the legal discourse community. The only things that need to be added are the sources for the different ideas presented. Also, she could throw in some real life examples of the legal language. This will grab the readers attention from the beginning

Peer Workshop

Joe had a great start on his paper. It was very interesting and got my attention right away. He definitely wrote the paper for someone who is not familiar with the discourse community. I suggested that he focus more on the specific aspects of the discourse community. Maybe offer suggestions as to what things someone would need to understand and learn to be a part of the legal community. He has a great start to his paper.

Michelle Chalupa Peer Evaluation

I think that Michelle has a good start on this assignment, but needs help in organizing her paragraphs. Possibly a more clear thesis will help with her organization process. Depending on the audience, she may want to define some of the terms within her career field of pharmaceutical sales so that general audiences not familiar with the terms can understand.

evaluation of essay

Cassie has really good ideas in her essay. She needs to have some clarity and organization to make it complete. She was creative with her ideas as well. I enjoyed reading her paper even thought like I said it needs some organization. Another thing that I notice is that she needs to complete citing her sources. Those were the only problems that I found with her essay, but overall she has a really good start.

DC Research

So far, my paper is far from complete but I have good feeling about it. I chose the legal community because it is the discourse that I would like to be a member of some day. A few problems I have confronted is finding adequate sources. I don’t know if I should quote lawyers, judges and politicians and explain the language they use, or what?

Self Eval.

I am not happy with my rough draft at all. I had a hard time finding good research materials. I was hoping to at least find somthing that could validate my ideas of Pharmaceutical Sales being a discourse community of 3 different genres: Science, Business, and Communication. I'm confused about my organization, and came to a point in my paper where I just went blank! I'm frustrated and stressed out, and lucky to have written what I do have written.

paper #3

I think that my paper needs a lot more work. I feel that since I had mush time that I didn't get to put 100% effort into it. Your comments always help me out so a lot of those I'm assuming will be needed!

Self Evaluation

I feel as though my paper is off to a good start, i feel like i need to intergrate my sources better, in to my paper and expand and make my draft a little. I had a hard time finding really good research materials because there is not much information on my career field yet. it is a newer type of discourse community. I am looking for some comments from people to make it better and how i could go deeper my discourse community better. I tried to give the rough draft as much effort as i could but i know there is a lot that can be fixed and made better.

Progress on Paper

I am happy with my paper. I decided to do the dance and dance education discourse community, which I think will be original because it is not a typical or popular area of study in college. As far as organization goes, I broke down the main media coverage and how dance education differs from other forms of education. I think I could use help on organization and the flow from paragraph to paragraph.

Self Evaluation 3

It took me a little bit of time to find out how I wanted to go about writing this paper on my area. But recently I think I have found my way. I am not far on my rough draft at all, but since I have discovered how I am going to write it my progress has definitely moved faster. Now I just need to collect more sources.

Progress

For my rough draft I only made it to about page three so I am not all the way done yet. I know what needs to be in there but I'm just having a hard time putting into words what I am trying to say. I think that over the next week I will be able to make a lot of improvements. I'm not really happy with it but I'm ready to recieve some feedback.

Essay #3

I think that my research paper was hard because no one and nothing that we did this week was really beneficial to my research. I know that most of the people in here did not match what I was going for in my career. I really liked my "law group" however law is only a small part in my career field. Luckly I found a couple of sources that hopefully helped me of getting a better idea of where I wanted to go in my life.

I feel that I need some professional help with understanding where I am at with this project, although I am open to read opinions if anyone has anything to say about my paper.
Even though, I feel that this paper is beneficial to my life its hard to really state where I want to go and be in a couple of years. I have a vivid imagination of where I want to go but I do not know the specific steps which will lead me to my goals.

Essay 3 IPC

My research so far in this career field has been successful and informative to me in the sense that I have found many useful and helpful sources that aid in my further investigation of my career field. My chosen career field is Interpersonal Communications and public speaking. As an aspiring public speaker, I value any help I can get and when it comes to finding sources whether electronic or reference, I appreciate sources that are going to be worth utilizing fot this essay. Up to this point I feel that I have been quite successful at making progress with my research.

Self Evaluation

So far I think my essay is going pretty good. I need to add a conclusion and proofread it, but I think I have a good start. I also need to add a few more sources to the paper, as I have a few ideas without sources as an example. I have not worked a lot on my annotated bibliography. have some sources, but have not summarized what they are about yet.

Self Evaluation

I feel that my rough draft is fairly intact. I found a lot of research on my career field, but wasn't fully sure if it would be the correct type of research needed. The acutal assignment is still slightly fuzzy, but I believe I have it under control. Hopefully the peer workshop will give me plenty of insight and help.

criteria

Creativity and organization- I say this because these are two things that make an essay worth reading and worth your while. The third one should be the quality of the essay. You have to consider weather or not the writer really is putting forth effort.

Essay 3 - criteria

Organization: this is key to writing a good paper,
Reputable Resources: should be reliable and legit,
Clarity & Creativity: should be unique, yet full of facts and be understandable.

Research thus far

I was not in class this morning because I was searching for more resources on my career field at the Library. I didn't get too much more. I have several websites with information, but would like to gather text books with information. I'm having trouble doing so. My career field is secondary education. Questions that I have are: do we focus on one main point, such as low wages for teachers? Do I describe courses required to get into this career field?

criteria

show how the language is effective in your field, not only do book research but try to research how people feel about your careers use of language,

Essay 3 Criteria

Joe Mancuso

1. Clarity of Source: This should be the main focus becuase we will be using these sources to better define and explain our DC. The sources need to be from somewhat reputable places. Academic Search Premier would be a good source locator.
2. Organization: It's a given.
3. Creativity: Writing a boring paper is a terrible terrible thing. You might as well have not even written it. Having a little creativity will add jazz to the paper to get your audience's attention.

In-class activity: Criteria for Essay #3

In a reply to this posting, describe 2-3 criteria that you feel are the most important things to consider when evaluating our drafts of essay #3. Be specific in naming your criteria as well--don't just say "research" but indicate what about the research we should evaluate (representative research? sufficient research? frequently cited research? etc).

Career post

The area that I am interested in working in is Newscasting. My major is in Broadcasting and I am looking to use that to work behind the cameras and also eventually in front of them. The discourse community I am looking at is the actual language that the newscaster speaks. So therefore that can include both written script and also impromptu speaking. But I have found out thus far that there are some rules to this particular discourse community.

About the project 3

My project discourse is pre-law. This assignment has been rather difficult because i have not found many useful sources. I am not sure how to start the paper and tie it all together. I feel the annotated bibliography will be helpful although i have not completed that.

Research Project

My major is Interpersonal Communication with a minor in business. I have information about the use of communication in business. I don’t have a set career plan yet, I am not really sure what I want to do when I graduate. I am focusing my research on the role of communication in business. I have some more concrete ideas such as working within the Employment Agency (as a liaison between businesses and employees for the nursing, home-health care, and light industrial fields because that is what I think I will be doing when I graduate.) I have also been looking at information for Human Resources because it is a field that interests me and something I may like to do.

My career field is business law. So far I have been using web sites, articles, and text books from previous law classes. I feel like i understand the law discourse community fairly well, but I have a question regarding the assignment. It says that we are supposed to focus on one issue, debate, or problem within our field. Can you explain what this means and how we are suppose to incorporate that into our analysis? Thanks!

career post

well i am basically getting my information from one website that has links to many links to other insurance sites all of which are useful. the one thing i learned that was new to me about an insurance claims adjuster is that i would have to opportunity to specialize, also something new to me is that claims adjuster many times are on call which is useful especially when a major disaster strikes, and if a community is struck pretty bad that i would get paged and then i would work with local authorities and other adjusters to get estimates throughout the community. my paper should be fine i have really started any drafts or anything but i should be alright.

Research Update Response

The research I have been conducting for project #3 has been for my major which is Interpersonal Communication and public speaking. I have used certain websites as well as the BGSU website to get a start on the research for this career field. So far the sources have been helpful and I have been making some progress on it.
My Career field is Dance Education with a focus in business. I currently own a dance studio, and my major IPC with a minor in entrepreneurship has afforded me direction in how to operate this business successfully. I already know a lot about the dance world from experience, but extra research for this project is helping me to focus on certain areas I have not considered since the growth of my business. I still need to gather more information to use for this paper. Right now I am slightly confused as to what needs to be included.

Update on Research

I am finding somethings on my career field. I am majoring in IPC and my career choice is Event planner-coordinator and i will be minoring in marketing. I have found some information about the communication aspect of the career and am finding more and more as i search. I was having some trouble with this in the beginning but now am figuring out what to write about.

Project Thus Far

So far I have gathered research on what I wanted my major to be (Supply Chain Management) and reseach on what I want it be (event planning with a minor in marketing). I have looked into the history behind both professions. As far as event planning goes, I have done more research on the logistics behind the profession and have gotten a better insight as to the types of jargon and phrases that are used by people efficient in this field.
My career field is to become a full-time Corporate Executive Officer, and become a part-time venture capitalists. I also plan to completely understand how all of the organizations in the business world operate from accountants to lawyers. I hope to my student organizations and honor societies (that I am a part of and want to be in) and apply them critically to my career field. My main career goal is to easily be able to help anyone who does not understand about the business world in any area, and prevent any illegal action that may jeopardize the company that I work for and my future.

My problems is that I feel that I don't have enough efficient sources that can help me with my project. My question is that can you help us give us general sources. Such as a laws, business, and communicationable resources.

Response for Wednesday 10/10

I actually know a lot about the field that I want to go into thanks in part to being involved with BGSU's chapter of PRSSA. The research I've found thus far for this project is decent but I'm just not sure if it's what I need. The project itself still kind of confuses me to be honest.

October, 9 2007

My progress for the third paper is going along smoothly. I already know quite a bit about my career field so everything that I am learning is a helpful reminder of what I need to be aware of and consistently focus on. My career field is Pharmaceutical or Bio-Tex sales. I also attended the job fair Tuesday and learned a lot about a company called Medtronic. They are a bio medical sales and marketing company that helps alleviate pain for people with diabetes. One question I might have is whether or not you're supposed to ask questions in an interview such as; How much will I be getting paid?

Education

My career field that I am in is Education for this project. So far I have found all of my sources that I will need in order to complete this paper. I am currently brainstorming / creating an outline of how I want my paper to be structured, once I figure that out I will be able to beging my rough draft soon. When searching my sources, I found out that my career field had a lot of issues that I didn't know about previously. The National Education Association website which is one of my main sources, lists a lot of issues that are taking place. Testing and achievement gaps are issues I already knew about but I didn't know that professional pay was a big one or teacher shortages, or transgendered students were issues also. As for questions on this project, they have all been answered in an email. I'm using the issue of achievement gap and anaylizing my sources from this within my field to understand how my field communicates about this topic.

Response: Informal Progress Report

In a post for Wednesday, discuss your progress so far on research for this project. What is your career field? Also, summarize in general what you've found that's new to you about your field. Finally, what questions do you have or problems concerning this project?

Monday Response

Facebook.com and texting are two of the most widely used forms of communication used especially used by college students. I can't really decide however, if they are the most efficicient ways of communication. Technology allows for this because it has evolved and grown but, to what extent do our communication and lives have to revolve around digital mediums. I do agree that it has become an integral part of many lives but, I question how much of it is too much.

Monday (10/08) Response

I'm not sure I understand the question but from what I get out of it, I suppose full sentences with actual punctuation, etc. wouldn't be proper since text messaging is all about getting straight to the point. This is understandable, at least to me, since a lot of my texting is done while doing something else and I want to communicate but make sure I can say what I want very quickly.

I don't think propriety can be judged on a universal level because everyone is different. Just as I think cutting out letters and replacing them with numbers is okay to put in a text message, the person reading this might not think so. Things like this all boil down to the person receiving the message. It only matters if someone gets put off by something and most likely the person sending the message isn't thinking "Gosh, I hate butchering the English language and getting my 15 word sentence across in just 7." That's a bit exaggerated but the idea is clear that people sending a message, be in through text, don't really think of its appropriateness until someone has brought it to their attention.

Response to Facebook and Texting

Technology propriety is an important issue because it is how we communicate with other people now for the most part. On Facebook most things people write and do are inappropriate and are about non important subjects that are just for the social matter and not academic. They will write to a friend a long paragrapha bout what is going on in their life while using bad grammar and mispelling. There are people that use Facebook in the proper and dont put vulgar things and swear words on peoples walls, but it is not comonly found on facebook. While in Texting a lot of people use the letter "u" instead of typing out "you" and instead of saying "know" they will write "knw", that doesnt make much sense to me because it is missing just one letter but people do do that. I think that propriety can be juged on a case-by-case baisis because a certian individual is not going to use unproper language online all the time. It should be encouraged to use communication in the proper way, but in reality people are going to type online how they feel. In the world of Facebook people are't going to care if you mispell a word but if you were writing to an employer then that would be a different situation.

Facebook.com

I believe that technology propriety is an important issue because of reality. Reality is the 9 to 5 working world where there is work, eat, and sleep. The reality of facebook.com is parties, friends, and possibly vulgar things. It is a world of its own, but what students do not realize is that they are putting themselves out there to be caught in illegal acts. If you are throwing a party with alcohol and underage consumption, do not tell the entire student body of when, where, and who is attending because it is public and if authorities have the desire to do so, they are able to access that information by the click of a button.
Another aspect of reality for why facebook.com should be decent and respectable is because employers do look into your page sometimes. They may have thought there was more to you than perceived in an interview and can check to see if you have a profile. After seeing inappropriate photos, text, or illegal matter the employer could highly reconsider everything from your interview.
The correct context that should be used on facebook.com is proper etiquette, respectability, and common sense. Proper etiquette should be used because of the employers who are searching for deeper information about you online. Respect for yourself and others by posting non vulgar, legal things should be present in the community. Finally, common sense is a given because if you are going to tell on yourself for something wrong or bad you’re taking part in, do not get mad when you get caught.
I think propriety is a very important issue in our world today. There are a lot of people that rely on technology to communicate with others. Many career fields utilize technology to communicate as well. It is important to know how to be polite and respectful when talking to others through facebook, AIM, and texting. The things that are appropriate differ on a case-by-case basis. If someone is talking to his or her friends abbreviations and slang would not be rude. If a person is communicating via text messaging with a client or a boss, proper English should be used.

There are different things that are appropriate depending on the medium a person is using as well. For example, texting is often shorter conversations with abbreviated words and incomplete sentences. People assume that when they text someone they will receive a text back within a reasonable amount of time. Facebook, on the other hand, is not as instantaneous. People often type longer paragraphs. Incomplete sentences and abbreviations are still used, but not as much.

Response for Monday- Facebook

I feel that as society gets more technologically advanced, the people within the society should adapt. I also feel that by using certain forms of technology, example facebook and text messaging communication has gotten so impersonal. I think that when individuals communicate through facebook they are leaving messages that are usually vague and without feeling because they know that a mass of people will be able to read this message.

I feel that in the future society is only going to be more technologically based, and the way we educate future generations should reflect this aspect of society. I also feel that it should be encouraged that people still use proper means of communication in certain situations. I feel that the business setting and education setting are not the proper place to use this type of communication.

Monday Response

This is an important issue because so many people rely on technology in this day and age. Some people have their whole lives planned out in their blackberry or in their cell phone schedule. I know people that check their facebook more then ten times a day. People feel as if their facebook page is their own, something that they can share with friends or family. They also feel as if they can block people they don't like out of those areas for example, making some one private. I think ownership makes people feel good about themselves. But when it comes to fitting in its a case-by-case situation. Everyone is different and feels differently about certain things whether its facebook or a cell phone.

Career ft. Assertive and Deferential

I believe that my career field applies to both assertive and deference.
When you are in the "first impression" at any area you should look in a deferential so that you can get use to the discourse community, and when you are in trouble or certain "tests" arise in the workforce you should be assertive. Both of these skills are essiantial to my field because the more I master these skills, the more I will get use to the business world in my career. In general you socialize with deferential and attack with assertive.

Monday's Facebook

Technology propriety is an important issue because its the way that society is communicating.
For example, if you were to invest in a stock which would you prefer Trans World Entertainment (FYE, Sam Goody's, and Suncoast) or Apple Corportation (iPod, iPhone, and iTunes)? According to the high pay-off rate from the high asset turnovers and high net profit from the public the answer would be the Apple Corportation. It is important to understand the demand of the public because the more you know what the public needs, the farther you will go in life ethically and legally. This can also include running for government positions as well as operating your own businesses. Facebook and Textmessaging is no different. It is important to learn these trends just like multicultural language (Spanish to Japanese) because once you learn the communicational skills from these sites you are more likely to get farther in the society.

I think that text messaging has been a trend that was invented by the slaves that has been going on for many years and still years to come. The abbreviations that I read are not "new" to me as considered by most professional people these days. This type of writing was developed by slaves because they would either try to pronounce what their owner would say but couldn't or used codes to get to the north (which was considered to be the "free land" at one time ). People use text messaging to either be cool (like Kanye West) or to use codes that only certain people would know like (Klass's medical school education). Text messaging should not be viewed as "bad language", unless its really necessary. This all goes back to discourse community. For example, if you were working for the Toledo Blade or Times Magazines you would want really professional english, where as if you were talking to your friends on Facebook you would use little words, or text message, because you and your friend are more likely to understand each other. Another reason why text messaging is important is that you use it if you are writing programs such as the Computer Science classes. For example, if you type in "color.Name.text" your progam won't run properly, but if you type "color.Name.Txt" your program is more likely to run. In general terms if two people or things clearly understand each other no matter what they say (even if it is bad english) they clearly know how to successfuly communicate with one another, and thats whats important in society.

I believe that texting and Facebook should not be considered two seperate examples, however the two communicational devices that were brought up for this discussion should go hand-in-hand. In Facebook if you read the walls real closely they have text messaging as well. however there are limitations. If people don't feel a communicational connection or if certian people have "rules" (such as communicating effectively with out textmessaging) they may delete you as a friend or not accept your job applicaton. Textmessaging and Facebook are quite similar in cases that they have their own indeterministic (free will) beliefs on how the world operates on communication. Both articles state that the misuse of handling these discourse community communication skills may lead to serious consequences. However I do not believe that communicating in either way is purely bad. In my opion you should be aware on Facebook that everyone can see your pictures in one way or another (whether if you post it as a head picture or if you get it from an acquaintance). I am not saying you should not trust anyone, but be careful what you put up because it may cost you your future career. My persuasive solution would be that you should share with your friends your "good crazy times" by printing them out, and post things that are more likely not to get you in trouble.

I believe that propriety is judged universally and case-by-case basis at times depending on the presenter of the class. In some cases the judge universally may sometimes stereotype (or even give defamatory discrimination lectures) on how cultures operate. I believe propriety can't be purly understood unless there is a clear consistent method that backs it up with the case-by-case basis. The more you understand society, the more likely you will be able to make the right investment for your future. In my conclusion the consitution, teachers, and friends may show you the right way to live, but its your choice on how you will live you life.

Mondays Response

I believe that no matter how we look at things, that technology is going to affect everything we do now and in the future. Technology is constantly changing and its important for people to stay up with it. When it comes to the example in Bistrows article about how text messaging is destroying literacy, I do not agree with that at all. Dr. Lodge's response to that is that it's a weird way to communicate. Text message is not destroying literacy, I personally think its an excuse that people are using as to why they think students are not more literate in their writings. It's a teacher's job to teach students how to write properly and if they are not doing that then how can they blame text messaging as the main cause? Teachers are supposed to integrate technology into their classrom and stay up to date in their field by teaching their students for the future, not teaching their students in their decade.

Assertiveness and Deference

I feel that both of these can be used effectively in my career field. My career will eventually revolve around interpersonal communication and in several contexts of communication. Assertiveness may be used more effectively than deference and while these are important to consider so are the effects of using these types of communication. Interpersonal communication and public speaking are largely centered around using different styles and language.

assertive response

i believe in my chosen field being assertive is the main quality. my desired career goal is that of an insurance claims adjuster and i believe that i have to be assertive when i am dealing with peoples claims. i have to have the knowledge of that persons plan and be direct with that person in determining if that person gets a claim or not, whats covered in that particular person policy, and like the book states i have to use direct statements. i know at the hospital where i work now, i am assertive, but to other people i.e. my fellow co-workers they see me as arrogant, which sometimes i can be, but that's because i do not tolerate a lot of stuff, i cannot stand illogical reasoning. this is another reason i have chosen to go into the insurance field especially in claims because it gives me a chance to use logic as well as being assertive. even in times of crisis such as a tornado, flood, earthquake, etc that i have to be quick with peoples claims and be direct and to the point so to me assertiveness in my field is justified and thus needed

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

My career field is ipc, and I believe it is assertive. In the dance business I am in right now, the field is assertive because it is a competition based dance group, so I am constantly having to point out corrections and flaws in the dancers' unison. I often times have to make bold statements, and be strict and forward with the dancers when it is close to competition time.
